In a nutshell, you'll get to play the levels of Sonic 3 followed by the levels of Sonic & Knuckles with any of our heroes: Sonic, Tails or Knuckles, on a 13-zone-long game, together with 14 special stages, 7 for each Chaos Emerald and another 7 for each Super Emerald, altogether with a faceoff against Robotnik in his Death Egg, once and for all on the Classic Sonic series.

Due to time constraints and cartridge ROM size limitations, a bigger game had to be divided. Other than that, it's almost perfect.įor some people, Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles are considered like separate games, however, the truth that lies beyond is greater that anyone could expect. The only problems with this are how it won't let you play Blue Sphere, even though that's in the code of Sonic & Knuckles, and the Super/Hyper music just being endless loops of the invincibility music. It's also pretty fun breaking the game as Hyper Sonic (screen nuke and lots of speed as many times as you want) and Super Tails(summons birds that attack any enemies on screen). The elemental shields, Sonic's Insta-Shield, and Tail's flight (which he couldn't do in Sonic 2) are also really cool additions that completely change how the game is played.

*Without words.* That's a pretty big accomplishment. For example, the intro cutscene (Sonic and Tails fly to Angel Island on the Tornado, a plane, Sonic goes Super, and Knuckles punches the emeralds out of him and steals them) explains your character, an antagonist, the things you want to get back, and why Sonic and Tails didn't just leave the island. It's got amazing level design and music, and the entire story is explained really well without any words. The greatest 2D Sonic game (well, until Mania comes out).
